Cable companies are trying to catch up with the times, though, and now want you to replace your clunky set-top cable boxes with sleek, Apple TV-like streaming devices – gadgets that could save customers money. Xumo is one step in cable companies’ broader strategy to combine live TV with streaming – essentially rebundling streaming services like the old cable bundle. Moving from a cable box to Xumo will save cable customers money. It’s a shift for cable companies that long relied on trying to get households to add as many set-top cable boxes in their homes as possible. It could be a while before the ancient cable box completely disappears, however.

London CNN —Oil prices tumbled more than 4% Wednesday after a group of the biggest oil producing nations said they would delay a meeting, originally scheduled for Sunday, that was expected to discuss making further cuts to global supply. Brent crude, the global benchmark, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, the US benchmark, both fell over 4% late morning ET. Likewise, earlier on Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Saudi officials were unhappy with some OPEC members’ levels of output. Both Brent and WTI prices have fallen for four consecutive weeks, pressured by record crude oil production in the United States and worries about waning global demand, particularly in China, the world’s biggest oil importer. Rystad still expects OPEC+ to reach an agreement at the meeting on November 30, but the process will likely be “challenging,” he added.

But the cost of crude oil has been largely declining since the middle of October. The average for a gallon of gas in the United States, meanwhile, dropped to $3.37, according to AAA. This “steady, if slow” decline in gas prices, said an AAA spokesperson, may soon gain speed if oil prices continue their descent. They’re more concerned with economic weakness in China and an increase in oil production in the United States. In the first week of November, US crude oil production reached a new record of 13.2 million barrels per day.

London CNN —German shoemaker Birkenstock has filed for an initial public offering in New York, becoming the latest European company to choose the United States as the place to raise money on the stock market. The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, reported Tuesday that Birkenstock was seeking a valuation of more than $8 billion. The family business traces its origins back to 1774 when church archives mention Johannes Birkenstock, who worked as a cobbler in Langen-Bergheim, Germany. The planned IPO marks another milestone for the shoemaker, which joins the ranks of high-profile European companies seeking a public offering across the pond rather than at home. Samantha Irby Says It’s OK to Hate Your Body

Talk Samantha Irby Says It’s OK to Hate Your BodyAs far as descriptions of writers go, “humorist” has an old-fashioned, almost quaint ring to it, the literary equivalent of haberdasher or lamplighter. Maybe I was born too early to get on the “I don’t give a [expletive] if you see my legs” thing. I don’t know if this is controversial, but I don’t miss my parents. But I don’t know. I think I’m off the hook a little because my main target is myself, but the joke sensitivity is wild to me.

New York CNN —Jenny Craig, the weight-loss chain, has confirmed that it’s shutting down for good. Named after its founder, the Jenny Craig business started when she couldn’t lose weight after giving birth to her second child. WeightWatchers, for example, is getting into the prescription weight-loss drug business. The $106 million acquisition of Sequence will give WW a foothold into the growing market for prescription drugs to manage weight loss. Ozempic has gained popularity in part due to celebrities using it for weight loss.
THE EDEN TEST, by Adam SternberghA woman surprises her husband with a weeklong couples’ retreat in “The Eden Test,” Adam Sternbergh’s new thriller. Threat shimmers around their isolated cabin, though one suspects that nothing would force them to endure anything more painful than a week of “working on the relationship.”On their first date, three years earlier, Daisy licked a smudge of crème brûlée off Craig’s chin, a mischievous gesture that bound them together. They spent weekends together eating croissants and reading the paper, “its sections unfurled all around them like blueprints for some brazen upcoming heist.” “The Eden Test” shows how a couple in love can seem like a two-person army, fugitives from the outside world. As the novel’s epigraph, from Adam Phillips, puts it, “A couple is a conspiracy in search of a crime.”Now, Daisy and Craig appear less like co-conspirators than adversaries. The denim overalls that Craig used to strip off Daisy have become “those [expletive] overalls she always wears.” And Daisy is cleareyed about Craig’s failings, from his infidelities to his pretension about restaurants, “as though he’d studied in the finest culinary schools of Europe, rather than being just another dude in Brooklyn with a credit card and a subscription to Bon Appétit.” Craig is preparing to leave her for his mistress, and Daisy hasn’t been entirely honest with him, either.

The government has guaranteed to keep average household energy bills below 2,500 pounds ($3,086) a year until the end of April and below 3,000 pounds until March 31, 2024. Following the wholesale price slump analysts at Cornwall Insight forecast average annual energy bills, under a cap set by regulator Ofgem, will fall to around 2,201 pounds a year in July and reach 2,241 pounds a year in October. Prices however remain historically high, meaning consumers are unlikely to feel much better off. "The cap predictions for April remain nearly three times what a typical household was paying pre-pandemic,” Craig Lowrey, Principal Consultant at Cornwall Insight said. CNN —The effects of human activity from climate change to pollution are “devastating” marine life, with nearly a tenth of underwater plants and animals assessed so far threatened with extinction, the latest Red List of Threatened Species showed on Friday. “It shows that we are having quite a devastating impact on marine species,” Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, said. Linda Lombardi/AP/FILEHilton-Taylor said the portion of marine species facing extinction was likely much higher than current data shows because those analyzed so far have tended to be widespread fish species, not currently under threat. The latest list reviews abalone species, a type of mollusc sold as a luxury seafood item, for the first time and found that around 44% of them face extinction. “The awful status of these species should shock us and engage us for urgent action,” said Amanda Vincent, chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Marine Conservation Committee.

X-59: NASA’s ‘quiet’ supersonic plane revealed
  + stars: | 2022-07-25 | by ( Jacopo Prisco | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —If you’ve heard a sonic boom recently, you probably remember it. Now, NASA is working to change those regulations by transforming the boom into a “thump,” paving the way for a new generation of quieter supersonic aircraft. It’s set to take off for the first time later this year, ahead of its first quiet supersonic flight. “It will be significantly quieter than Concorde or any other supersonic aircraft that exist today,” Craig Nickol, senior adviser at NASA Headquarters, told CNN in 2022. However, it’s doubtful that any of them will be able to take advantage of the findings of the Quesst program, which will likely inform the next generation of supersonic aircraft.
